It's back-to-school week. Did you get your fourth day?

Cyril talks about it in RudeOps #79 — that moment in the holidays when your brain finally flushes its cache and you sort what you still love doing from what you just endure.

The moment is wild — and it's about to get wilder. Up to 2.9 billion commits a month, bots now writing and reading the web for you — it's hard not to wonder if AI will replace our job.

I have mixed feelings. Cranking out lines of code on an assembly line? That's a bygone era. On the other hand, AI now gives you a much wider lens — especially if you're freelance or solo. Where you used to focus on code and leave security, design or marketing for later, you can now cover it all — if you take the time to discuss with your agents, submit ideas, even have them challenged. You'll ship faster, and you'll ship something more functional, more secure, better tested.

The flip side, you know it: limits have exploded, ideas pile up, and your brain can't keep up. Some call it brain fry — the signal that you need to slow down. The rule hasn't changed: if you believe in your project, stay focused, don't chase every shiny object that just dropped. AI can help you stay on track — or derail you if you let it feed every whim. So my mantra for this rentrée is simple: keep calm and stay focused.

This week I'm talking with Yves Rougy, 54, who has been passionate about computing since his father's TO7 in the early 1980s. Trained in mathematics then software engineering (University of Franche-Comté), he shifted from dev to systems, administration and OS integration — tuning and advanced troubleshooting — before going freelance 15+ years ago as a trainer. Radio amateur F1IVT, he explores radio transmissions, signal processing and space tech, and for the last 2-3 years has been deep into self-hosted LLMs and data governance. You may know him through his Yorzian media, a Glass Box lab live on Twitch and YouTube where he documents his watch and infra tests, and his compression benchmarks at gguf-bench.com.

Here's his advice if you're starting out:

It's a difficult question in current times. I think that in dev, in a little while, manual writing of code will be reserved for the hobby side, but from a professional point of view, it will be AIs that will do this work. That said, a good dev doesn't just do code, it's all a work of understanding and architecture, life cycle to think about, and scalability of the project.

When digital cameras arrived, the death of wedding photographers was announced. Many photographers effectively disappeared, because their only added value was knowing how to take a photo and having the equipment. The cheap digital camera lowered the threshold of access to this profession. However, those who knew how to create a style and an approach of their own, even with small equipment, managed to differentiate themselves from the one who just presses the button. The one who only presses a button while charging for the service got replaced by the guests who only pressed a button on their smartphone. The others are still there.

For dev, we're at the same level. AIs allow many people to start coding, without necessarily having to do studies or training in the field. So if your vision of dev is just writing code, you're in the same situation as photographers who just pressed the button. And for that you have to understand what you're doing, and not delegate understanding to an AI.

MCP Apps

Eric Burel is back for the new school year with a fascinating new article on AI. Today he explains the new MCP Apps extension.

Web developers, you are not doomed to spend the next 30 years of your career passively watching Lovable spit out SaaS apps at lightning speed while you play Game Boy, glancing at the screen from time to time just to check that the AI hasn't escaped its sandbox.

You can do better than that. You can play a leading role in the world of artificial intelligence. And you don't need to know Python and LangChain for that! On the contrary, it's your skills in JavaScript, HTML and CSS that will be increasingly in demand by companies that want to build AI systems.

Indeed, the MCP Apps extension enriches the MCP protocol with a new capability: serving real frontend graphical interfaces inside an AI platform.

Thanks to MCP Apps, an AI agent can trigger the display of widgets in response to user requests.

These micro-graphical interfaces make it easier to interact with a wide variety of services, directly within an AI platform such as ChatGPT, Claude, Mistral or even VS Code. For example, generating a company productivity graph, visualizing your overdue Jira tickets, or displaying a list of recommended trips if you're already burned out after two days back.

For frontend developers and designers, creating MCP Apps means mastering a new environment with a very particular user experience. For backend and agentic developers, it's about building web services that mix human use and interactions with AI.

The open source frameworks Skybridge and mcp-use provide everything you need to get started with MCP Apps using React for the frontend, and Node.js or Python for the backend. It is also possible to stick to a pure HTML/CSS/JS implementation.

Let's move on to the demo. I have a use case that will speak to all techies, a deeply disruptive and innovative use case...

So concretely, how do you run Doom inside Claude with MCP Apps?

Not so simple — it still took me a few iterations even using mcp-use. The iframe version never worked, because the MCP host (i.e. the user's AI platform, here Claude) imposes quite strong limitations on the iframe that displays the UI component, precisely so you don't do just anything. Like running Doom, for example. The CSS version of Doom (yes, you read that right) displays but doesn't work and the window size is hard to fix. The WebAssembly version, after a good AI-assisted compilation phase, finally ran! I published the code for these experiments on GitHub.

The mouse coordinates are still off and keyboard focus seems impossible to obtain, so feel free to contribute to the project via this issue.

But still: we have a complex WebAssembly interface that can be executed inside a mainstream AI platform!

For the record, I'm unfortunately only the third to pull off this feat. Korben documented in April a first functional Doom demo with MCP Apps by Chris Nager. Before that, developer Gunnar Grosch presented an even crazier architecture, based not on an MCP App but on image streaming via MCP with the game running on the backend.

In short, with MCP Apps, AI platforms are becoming real marketplaces that allow developers to distribute web apps through a new channel. The marketing stakes are obvious, but not only — the use cases are numerous and still largely unexplored at this stage. Plenty of work ahead for web devs!


X sends cease-and-desist to open source project Nitter over alleged scraping

On August 25, X Corp sent cease-and-desist letters to Nitter and its instances demanding a permanent takedown of the privacy-friendly front-end and its GitHub repository. X accused the project of scraping via its API and violating the Texas Harmful Access by Computer Act, setting a 5 p.m. EST deadline — the flagship instance went dark as maintainer Zedeus sought legal advice.

Announcing first Maintainers in Residence

Published on August 26 on the Rust Blog, the Rust Project and Rust Foundation announced its first cohort of Maintainers in Residence funded for 12 months via the $350,000 Maintainers Fund (Google, AWS, OpenAI). Upcoming changes to GitHub Copilot policies and billing

In a GitHub Changelog post dated August 28, GitHub detailed three upcoming Copilot changes. New Copilot Business/Enterprise seat assignments will require upfront payment before access and be chargeable at the next cycle (October 1 for existing credit card/PayPal customers), Copilot Chat on github.com, Mobile and cloud agent will merge into a single retained-session experience from September 28, and Copilot code review default will switch from Lite to Balanced.

Hackers claim millions of patient records stolen at healthcare giant McKesson

Published on August 31 by TechCrunch — following McKesson's SEC filing on August 28 disclosing discovery on August 25 — extortion group ShinyHunters claims to have stolen ~284 million records (~1 TB) from McKesson's Snowflake and Salesforce environments. The group says it used voice-phishing to hijack Okta accounts over four days (August 21–25), exfiltrating names, SSNs, medical record numbers and prescriptions, and demanded a $55M ransom.

Supply chain attack on arrayref

Posted on August 20 on the Rust Blog by the Security Response Team, the post confirms a supply chain compromise via a hijacked maintainer account that published arrayref 0.3.10, internment 0.8.7 and append-only-vec 0.1.9. Each added a typosquatted proc-macro1 dependency whose build.rs downloaded and executed a remote payload — arrayref (245M+ all-time downloads) was live 86 minutes before removal.

Reported on August 31 by TechRepublic, sourcing The Information, OpenAI quietly bought tens of thousands of Mac mini and Mac Studio systems in recent months for reinforcement-learning and computer-use agent training. 1. Can you introduce yourself?

Hi! I'm Yves Rougy, I'm 54 years old, and I've been passionate about the world of computing in the broad sense since the early 1980s and discovering the TO7 brought home on the day of its release by my father. He gave me the tech bug, because I used to hang around his workshop where he repaired televisions, hi-fi equipment, VCRs and the like. After about twenty years spent in Paris for work, I settled in a small house in the middle of the countryside. More room for equipment, but also less time because you have to maintain the house!

2. What is your specialty? What is your favourite language?

Let's say my historical specialty, actually, because I constantly explore lots of things. Although I studied development (software engineering), I mainly focused on the systems side, administration, OS integration, a bit of fine-tuning and advanced troubleshooting as well. And for a few years now, I've mainly been giving training on these subjects. So I'd say popularization and pedagogy are also two aspects of my specialty. But since I can't stay on a single subject, I'm very interested in radio transmissions, I'm also a radio amateur with the callsign F1IVT. It mixes signal processing, antenna building, space technologies... And for the last 2 or 3 years, I've been taking a close interest in technologies around LLMs, with self-hosting models in mind, data governance if I want to use fashionable expressions!!

As for my favourite language, I don't have one. And besides, I've always had a hard time making rankings. I enjoy using the Unix shell, but I'd say I do a bit of Python when I need to go a bit further. But it's more out of practicality than conviction. Otherwise, I've dabbled a bit in Go, and I found it really quite good. However, I haven't done any particular project with it, just tinkering, but in principle, it's the one I would turn to!

3. Are you a career changer? (have you previously worked in another field than IT)

No, it's really what I naturally headed towards from the start.

4. What did you study?

I started with maths studies, up to a Bachelor's degree, taking my time. But I couldn't go on to a Master's afterwards, military service was still mandatory, and I had to go and serve. When I returned, I chose to go into computer science, aware that if I wanted to work in the IT world, it would be a plus to have a recognized degree. We're not yet in the 2000s and IT was not as versatile as it is today. At my university (University of Franche-Comté in Besançon) there was a new programme called IUP, which awarded an Engineer-Master degree and a Master's. So I was able to enter directly into the second year, at Bachelor's level. But my calling card that opened doors for me is above all what I did and shared on my own, before these studies, and during these studies. I'd been tinkering with Linux since 1994, and I'd shared tutorials and documentation before. For example I had made a tutorial on kernel compilation (which only translated and paraphrased the help from the official documentation!) which had been published on linux-france in the pre-2000 era.

5. How did you get started professionally? Internship, apprenticeship, direct employment?

First, I worked a bit every summer from the age of 17, to finance my studies at least in part. But in the IT world, a very nice experience, still during my studies, was to give a hand to a friend who had started a PC and software sales company. It was in the second half of the 1990s, so the Windows 95 and 98 era. I assembled hundreds of PCs in the back shop, and I got paid in hardware. But everything changed when I did my internship for the third year of the IUP. I went to work for 6 months in a company in Belgium. It was the second half of 1998. Everything was conducive to what I do today. The objective of my internship was to monitor that the company's internal emails (international) were circulating properly on the internal network via VPNs and dedicated lines, and not in clear text via the Internet. On the ground floor, there was Nicolas who hosted a small local ISP. And he got me to try my first Debian, Debian Hamm, 2.0. I was introduced to Linux in a corporate environment (with the print server on a Samba under Linux hidden behind the official Windows NT that was no longer connected to the network), to understanding routing, VPNs, protocols like SMTP, data sovereignty, and to meeting incredibly skilled people!

And after the internship, the company offered me a position in Paris, even before the end of my studies and obtaining my degree. But unfortunately, the Paris branch was not of the same level, and I only stayed there 6 months, before going to a startup that only did Linux in 2000. Likewise, I learned a huge amount there, there was an incredible concentration of skills. With Luc who was writing a functional webcam driver just from USB traces, Stelian who was a direct kernel contributor, Éric who found bugs in OpenSSL... Enough to stay humble.

6. And where are you at now?

It's now been more than 15 years that I've been self-employed, and that I move between clients. A lot of professional training, that is to say for people who come for 1 to 5 days depending on the case, to improve in a field. I've also worked a bit with schools. And I do more occasional interventions on consulting, administration, troubleshooting missions... Besides that, I create content on social networks, and I consider it part of my activity, since it brings me a little money (I clearly couldn't make a living from it however). It gives me the freedom I need, and above all the satisfaction of being responsible for my successes and my failures.

7. On your LinkedIn profile, we can read that you extend your Linux/Unix and radio expertise with the Yorzian media: a "Glass Box" lab on Twitch and YouTube, where you document your tech watch and infrastructure tests live.Can you explain this concept to us and why you chose to open your watch and infrastructure tests to the public in this way?

The idea is very simple. I've always done a lot of tech watch, I experiment a lot to understand and learn. In a very... irregular way. My idea is then twofold. First to carve out a time to do watch with an objective (instead of going in all directions), and on a regular basis. And then, since I like to share my knowledge or my "finds", well why not show it publicly? People are interested, it shows my know-how, it gives ideas by exchanging with the community, it creates valuable content over time. And incidentally, it makes a good business card. Most of my clients, I also find through word of mouth, so it also feeds that aspect. Honestly I found more advantages in sharing everything than keeping it to myself. And if I do something that doesn't work, it's not a big deal, because it's the daily life of any IT engineer. Not everything works on the first try!

On your personal site, you explain that your AI assistant runs in your basement, on a 2017 GTX 1070 and a 2014 Core i7 4790. The setup was challenging. What drives you to take on this kind of challenge?

In fact, following a tutorial in which everything works on the first try, I find that it's not very educational. So I look for how I can do something fun, and that teaches me more. In this case, I had the machine available, my main machine for AI was busy for a few weeks, so I had a real need behind it. And frankly it's fun. I really didn't think it would run like that. But already managing to get inference to start, then little by little trying to understand the parameters that improve speed, the trade-offs to find, I really had fun. So I would say, this kind of challenge is fun, and in addition it allows you to build skills and understanding. And it's this same kind of approach that makes me currently publishing benchmarks on self-hosted AIs according to their "compression" on https://gguf-bench.com/ It takes time, but it's super educational and potentially useful to others.

On your site, you also present yourself as an expert in radiocommunications, radio amateur F1IVT. It's a rare double hat — Linux and radio. What attracted you to radio? What advice in this field would you have liked to have if you were starting today?

Radio and I is an old story! Although I grew up in a universe made of soldering irons, resistors, diodes, transistors and small integrated circuits, I had no skill in understanding that world. During the summers, I worked to pay for my studies. And that year, I was in a holiday village with several jobs, including some at night (bartender and DJ, among others). Which allowed me to make friends with the night watchman. And during a day off, he offered to come with him to one of the ridges in the area (in the Haut Jura). On his car he had a magnetic antenna and he had a small CB radio. And I found it magical to see that you could make contacts several hundred kilometres away, like that, so simply. At the time, the Internet was not really present in homes. So, once the season was over, I went to the MJC youth and cultural centre in my town, to see if some were doing this kind of activity. And a Radio Amateur Club had been present for a short time. So I signed up, I followed the courses and I passed my radio licence. So it went much further than saying hello to a stranger a few kilometres away. There, I was able to see that with only one Watt of power, a good antenna, a bit of know-how, you could send a signal and hear the return of the signal on a satellite that was 30,000 km away from us, above Alaska (the AO-13 satellite at the time). I found that magical, and it never left me. As someone who loves technical challenges, I was well served! When I explored the intersection between the world of radio and computing, when I discovered radio networks, the packet radio of the time, and the possibility of connecting from relay to relay until reaching amateur radio BBSs, I also realized that most people used Linux to run their equipment. Linux that I was starting to discover on my own. And it was not surprising, the world of radio amateurs was full of geeks. You find a hacker culture. "Hey, I have this old rounded lid, maybe I can make an antenna out of it". You get out the soldering iron and there you go. It's not so far from "hey I have this old electronic gadget. Can Doom run on it?". To sum up, what attracted me to that world is precisely that. The absence of limits on what is technically possible to do. And that the world of waves is everywhere, because if you use any wireless device, well... it goes through radio waves! I don't know if I could find better advice than the one I was given at the time which was to experiment after my licence, to try lots of things to see what I liked most. And if I had advice to give to someone interested in the field, it's to find a community. It's important to stay motivated, to exchange, to try things. It's become a much more accessible hobby than before. For a few dozen euros, you can start doing cool things. And the second piece of advice is to pass the licence. It opens so many additional perspectives!

We can see that you are based 20 minutes from Chartres. What do you like about this region?

The calm! I lived more than 20 years in Paris after leaving my native Jura, and after spending great years rich culturally speaking, in terms of encounters, in terms of everything there is to do, I wanted to find a bit of calm, space and nature. I didn't know the region 5 years ago, so I'm still discovering it, but I'm on the edge of the Perche, and I particularly appreciate the calm and the natural side of the area.

8. Do you have other passions?

I try not to spread myself too thin, but I fell into the world of mechanical watches about fifteen years ago, and I have periods where I will dismantle and restore a small mechanical watch. It would deserve a bit more practice and time, but I had to make choices.

9. Can we see you at conferences or meetups? If not, where can we follow you?

I'm not much into meetups and conferences, it's something I'd like to be more present in. But I will be at Open Source Experience this year, I think I'll go back to the RMLL and then, we'll see!

However, you can follow me on several social networks. Although I don't post a lot on X/Twitter anymore, I'm still there as @yrougy. For Bluesky, it's @yrougy.bsky.social and for Mastodon @yrougy@piaille.fr. But where I'm most present is on Twitch (https://twitch.tv/Yorzian) and Youtube (https://youtube.com/@yrougy) because I do lives twice a week normally (outside holidays). And I of course have the whole range Discord, Instagram and TikTok. But I'd say lives and discord are the link with the people in my community.

10. Does your job ultimately match your expectations, your dreams?

It was a real choice on my part. I'm self-employed, I don't always earn a lot of money, but it gives me the luxury of doing what I like. And as long as I manage to pay the bills, I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

11. What advice would you give to those who are starting out in IT professions and more specifically in dev?

It's a difficult question in current times. I think that in dev, in a little while, manual writing of code will be reserved for the hobby side, but from a professional point of view, it will be AIs that will do this work. That said, a good dev doesn't just do code, it's all a work of understanding and architecture, life cycle to think about, and scalability of the project. When digital cameras arrived, the death of wedding photographers was announced. Many photographers effectively disappeared, because their only added value was knowing how to take a photo and having the equipment. The cheap digital camera lowered the threshold of access to this profession. However, those who knew how to create a style and an approach of their own, even with small equipment, managed to differentiate themselves from the one who just presses the button. The one who only presses a button while charging for the service got replaced by the guests who only pressed a button on their smartphone. The others are still there. For dev, we're at the same level. AIs allow many people to start coding, without necessarily having to do studies or training in the field. So if your vision of dev is just writing code, you're in the same situation as photographers who just pressed the button. And for that you have to understand what you're doing, and not delegate understanding to an AI.

12. New question 2026 - AI

Do you use AI in your work?

Yes, a lot, and even more and more

Which ones do you use? And which is currently your favourite?

I took the basic subscription with the 3 big ones: ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. And my favourite varies from week to week, depending on the developments they bring. But I also use a lot of local models, and particularly Qwen 3.6 35B which I find amazing. I'm currently doing a series of benchmarks on the 3.8 27B which is really good, but which is a bit slow on my hardware.

What do you mainly entrust to it as tasks?

It's very varied. From synthesized web search, to programming, tech watch synthesis, requests for technical explanations... it's become a real daily assistant. I also have it manage my todolist based on what I give it (emails, projects, etc.)

How do you see AI evolving in 5 years?

I think we're heading towards increasingly massive internal use of AI. Models that can be run on internal hardware are becoming really powerful (Qwen 3.8 27B I was talking about earlier is really impressive). And I think it will become an internal tool like we have a NAS or Internet access.

13. What are the 3 tools you use most in your daily dev life? (it can be whatever you want as long as it's related to your daily dev life: book, website, mug, software, etc.)?

A mechanical keyboard. It's starting to get old, but I have a hard time replacing it! My Homelab. I do so many experiments on it... My VPN to access my homelab and home from anywhere

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. It's not my favourite, because I hate making rankings, but the one whose name came to mind when answering this question.

Tomb Raider which kept me up all night since the first opus! I don't play much, but when the next one comes out, I'm definitely going to play it. I was a WoW player for a long time, but that was a long time ago!
