What's up devs? #7 — AI Changed the Dev Job. For Good.

This week, I read an interesting first-hand account on Shirley’s website. And I’d like to share it with you because, better than anything else I’ve read in recent months, it raises the question that’s on all our minds: how is our profession evolving with AI?
Nicolas Martignole — Principal Engineer at Back Market, co-founder of Devoxx France, with 29 years’ experience in the industry — explains in an interview with Prompt Humain how his team grew from zero to 300 engineers using generative AI in the space of a year. And the figures speak for themselves: 254 of the team’s 280 engineers spent at least €1 on Claude Code in June. The AI bill rose from $56,000 to $87,000 between May and June. As for him, he has “stopped coding in the traditional sense” since last September.
But what really struck me wasn’t the figures. It was what he said about the divide.
The divide isn’t generational: junior developers embrace it without hesitation (they have no position to defend), whilst those most resistant are those with 6–10 years’ experience – the ones who’ve climbed the ‘Python 3.11 expert’ mountain and see their expertise losing value in the face of a junior who’s good at using the prompt. There was even a clash in one team where two senior developers tried to restrict access to AI for three junior developers — one of the two eventually resigned. The CTO settled the matter: we respect your choice not to use it, but we won’t let anyone impose that on others.
And then there’s this line, which will stick in the mind: “The code produced by an LLM today is already better than that of 95 per cent of developers. In a year’s time, we’ll have forgotten that humans ever wrote code. What remains is judgement, creativity, and the ability to hold it all together.”
I really urge you to read Shirley’s full article on the subject (link in the Readers’ Corner section). He also discusses AI FinOps, costs spiralling out of control without proper management, dependence on US and Chinese suppliers, and this new emerging profession: knowing how to manage AI rather than code.
Meanwhile, Ronan Robe (Fruggr) published an equally important article on the ROI of AI — how his Mistral bill increased fivefold overnight without him changing a thing. The message is clear: AI is not a fixed cost that you provision once. It’s a dynamic cost that needs to be managed on a per-use basis.
He also highlights an observation I’ve made myself: there’s no harm in working with the very latest, highest-performing models, but the difficulty of the task at hand must match the model’s performance.
Once again, there’s no point in taking a Maserati to go and buy a baguette – and even less so when the bakery is just 10 metres from your front door!
In short, the summer of 2026 confirms what we’ve been sensing for the past year: the profession is changing. Not just on the surface – but at a deeper level.

Fanny Klauk — Agile & DevOps Coach, Trainer

1. Can you introduce yourself?
I'm Fanny KLAUK, an Agile & DevOps coach and trainer — that's my official professional label, and I've gotten quite good at saying it very fast. What really defines me and drives me is concretely helping dev teams, ops teams, business folks — from the very technical to the very functional — to embark on shared adventures together.
2. What is your specialty? What is your favorite language?
My specialty: delivering something tangible, something useful, reducing friction, improving processes and interactions, automating redundant tasks nobody likes doing, and being proud of what we produce. I'm lucky in my job to be able to "pause" and observe what's slowing us down or even blocking us, and to propose the most fitting solutions.
For that, I use my two favorite languages: spoken language — ideal for repeating, aligning, questioning, and rephrasing — and algorithm — ideal for aligning multi-colored teams: sometimes front, sometimes back, sometimes sys, sometimes all at once. The algorithm allows us all to understand each other, and I love that.
3. Are you a career changer? (Did you work in a field other than IT before?)
No, I've always studied and worked in IT.
4. What studies did you pursue?
My high school made me believe I was suddenly bad at math, so I opted for short studies and started a DUT in Computer Science at Orsay after my BAC-S. Then I discovered that logic, math, and CS actually liked me quite a bit, so I continued all the way to a Master's M2 SIC MIAGe at Nanterre then Paris Sorbonne, where my favorite subjects were development (I started with C++) and data.
5. How did you start in the professional world? Internship, work-study, direct employment?
I worked every summer from the age of 16, but I never managed to get a job in IT: “not enough experience!” grrr…
At the end of my DUT, I spent three months in Cork, Ireland, helping a researcher in biogenetics to put his findings into practice.
I then opted for a work-study programme from the start of my Bachelor’s degree, which lasted three years: I was initially lucky enough to be placed straight into a business team at Direct Assurance, working on management and actuarial matters – I loved getting to grips with users’ problems before helping them with software solutions. The funny thing is that I initially worked with VBA and SAS Enterprise Guide – tools I’d never come across before and which might not have appealed to me all that much. Nevertheless, it was thanks to this early experience that I was able to switch to the technologies I’ve since grown to love: those centred around data.
Hello Informatica and OLAP (oh my, that takes me back!)
At the end of my work-study programme (and after a stint at 01 Informatique!), I was able to choose to stay with the same company, this time in a development team. And the old-timers will know what I’m talking about: I landed my first job as an analyst-programmer ^^
6. And where are you now?
I’ve been working in IT for 23 years now: Developer, Analyst, Level 1–2 Support, Project Manager, Application Architect, Scrum Master, Product Owner, Project Lead, Trainer, Tech Lead Manager… I’ve picked up knowledge and skills wherever I’ve found it interesting: in development, operations, testing, business domains, and coaching – at times at a very operational level, at other times at a more strategic level.
7. On your Bluesky profile, it says that you’re an Agile and DevOps Coach and also a Trainer.
What do you bring to the teams that call on you?
Thanks to all my assignments and life experiences, I’m at a stage where I can draw on what I’ve learnt to bring a sense of calm to teams.
As I often say: people rarely call on me when everything’s going well. I’m most valuable when there are specific or systemic issues in teams’ day-to-day work.
In fact, it’s quite rare for me to be called in for a clearly defined problem: people know something isn’t working, but they need to pinpoint it and work out how to resolve it.
And if I’m called in for a specific problem, spoiler alert: there’s often another reason lurking behind it, and it’s up to me to find it.
Can you describe a typical day for us?
ça dépend, ça dépasse ^^ (Note : it’s a reference of a famous french movie “Le père Noël est une ordure”).
It varies enormously depending on the assignment.
I’ll tell you about my favourite kind of day: starting my day on my own. Surprising, isn’t it? Yet it’s this first part of the day that allows me to be organised and calm: there’ll be plenty of emotions later on due to a stubborn pipeline or a key contact who’s not responding, so I make a point of organising the potential hiccups for the team I’m supporting as objectively as possible.
Then the floodgates open: you know, the team ‘dailies’, the first cross-functional workshops of the morning, or the strategy meetings?
Intense observation and note-taking mode activated, because this is the time to understand the real friction points: not just what’s visible and verbalised, but also the impacts, the root causes, and the personal and collective forces that can come into play to drive progress. A problem arises and my role is to determine whether it’s the right problem we’re trying to solve, and what links it has with the system in which it appears: it’s out of the question to solve it by creating other problems elsewhere.
Next comes a series of discussions and questions: finding the right person or people, at the right time, to make things ‘click’ and thus obtain the right information, the necessary authorisations or any other means to resolve urgent situations.
Finally, taking a step back: pausing and taking a few steps away. OK, we may have solved today’s problem together. Now, what does that mean? What do we put in place to ensure it doesn’t happen again? Which process do we need to change? Which skill do we need to refine or acquire? Which tool do we need to modify, adopt or abandon?…
Basically: how can we improve?
It’s a constant draw on my past experiences – agility, DevOps, craftsmanship – but also a valuable reminder of the struggles we’ve faced before, which raise red flags before the problem even arises.
End of the day: let’s not kid ourselves, not everything is ‘finished’. My job is to put what awaits me the next day on the back burner, so that my brain can truly switch off: so I lay out clearly what has progressed and what needs to continue (the avenues to explore, the ideas, the names of key people…).
To do all this, I write a lot, I draw, I sketch.
You’ve worked in insurance, banking, mutual insurance companies… Is it easy to switch from one sector to another?
I love change: that little bit of uncertainty that makes you ask yourself, ‘Will I be able to do this?’. It held me back quite a bit in my early years, but then I ‘learnt to adapt’.
Because it’s normal to take time to adapt to a situation. That’s what sets us humans apart from robots or AI: we’re beings of perception, and we learn and grow based on what we receive or what we go out and seek.
And that’s what I’ve learnt to do, and what I now love doing: seeking out knowledge. It’s not easy, but it’s exhilarating.
Often, I receive little or no induction: I’m regarded as a senior member of staff and I’m called upon to work in contexts that are mostly complicated. So it’s up to me to seek out the information, the names of the people involved, the documents, the processes…
So it’s OK not to know straight away, not to have everything under control, and to say, ‘I don’t know, but I’m interested in this too – I’ll look into it’.
And I always emphasise this to the people I mentor personally in the professional world: if they’ve come to you, it’s because they’re lacking a skill or expertise that they don’t have. A grasp of the processes and the business: they already have that in-house. You, on the other hand, will bring a fresh perspective, past experience, motivation and the hope that they may no longer have. You’ll gradually build up your skills in the areas they’ve already mastered.
You also give talks. What do you think is the hardest part of this particular task?
Managing stress: when you present a topic, you’re putting yourself on the line (your expertise, your values and even your passions) and you’re putting your company on the line (its image, its own values). So there’s certainly a level of stress given the stakes involved.
The day I stop feeling stressed won’t be a good sign: too much confidence, not enough humility, or worse, a loss of enthusiasm!
It’s the same for any public speaking, workshop facilitation or training sessions I do.
But there too, it’s exhilarating: once I’m underway – and provided the preparation has been thorough – I just go with the flow and sometimes even manage to enjoy it… whilst staying focused!
We can see from your profile that you live in Tours. What do you like about this city/region?
Everything! It’s both big and small: big enough for lots of events to take place (concerts, shows, festivals, sporting events…) and small enough that you’re bound to bump into someone you know when you’re out in the city centre ^^
And it’s the region where my daughter grew up, where I met my partner, and where we set up TADx, the Tours Agile & DevOps Experience – a monthly meet-up focusing on topics we bring back from conferences where we’re lucky enough to speak or take part.
8. Do you have other passions?
Music, first and foremost. It surrounds me and carries me along all the time.
Sharing, communities, friends: I love putting the world to rights and imagining it to be a better place.
Space, observing it, and the way it reminds us to be humble.
And visual art in general, whether still images (manga, painting, photography…) or animation (films, music videos…)

the Jug Summer Camp in La Rochelle on Friday 4 September. It’s my favourite talk to kick off the new academic year – you still feel a bit like you’re on holiday and the welcome there is very warm
WAX on 1 October at the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille. It’ll be my first time there, as I’ve never taken part before
Bdx I/O on 29 and 30 October in Bordeaux. I’ve spoken there before and it’s a real pleasure to be returning.

10. Does your job meet your expectations and dreams?
I used to dream of being an astronaut ^^ for a very, very long time. Then my eyesight got really bad in Year 8. As the best way to become one back then was to train as a fighter pilot, that plan fell through.
Whilst my current job is clearly not the fulfilment of a dream, it is, however, a role in which I feel completely at home: I don’t have to force myself or put on an act.
In fact, there are many staff members or situations I’ve encountered in other contexts that I draw on in the way I support teams. So I’m quite much in line with my values and find fulfilment in what I can contribute.
11. What advice would you give to those starting out in IT and dev?
"You bring a human touch to what you do – keep it that way."
That’s what makes being a developer so rewarding today: bringing different ways of seeing and doing things, understanding what we’re producing, being aware of the impact of a decision or a change, taking a step back to reflect and question, and knowing how to challenge an idea with others.
And as the hardest part these days is getting started – being given the chance to take on your first assignment – be proud of your early personal achievements, even if they don’t make it into production, even if it’s just a test that might seem pointless. Show what you’ve already achieved; don’t turn up empty-handed – it will help you.
12. New question for 2026 — AI
Do you use AI in your work?
Yes, regularly
If so:
Which ones do you use? And which is currently your favourite?
I haven’t done any professional coding for six years, so I haven’t yet had the chance to put multiple solutions through their paces.
I mainly use ChatGPT (personal licence) to speed up my research and summarising work.
What tasks do you mainly ask it to carry out?
What saves me a huge amount of time are the references I ask for to guide my reading or viewing more effectively. Mind you, my spending on books has doubled since I started using ChatGPT, but I have to admit: I haven’t been disappointed so far.
How do you see AI evolving in five years’ time?
I have very mixed feelings: as a committed user, I know how useful it is, provided it’s used sensibly. So I’d like it to be accessible but supported, otherwise there’s a risk of reinforcing unfounded, unverified beliefs.
As a citizen of our little planet, I’d like it to evolve and have less and less of an impact.
13. What are your 3 most used tools as an Agile & DevOps coach?
VSM — Value Stream Mapping: those who know me well are aware that I use this method quite systematically to observe, understand and improve a flow or process as a group. It comes from Lean and enables us to regularly ask the right questions in order to make improvements across an entire system, not just locally.
Powerful questioning: this is a technique I discovered during a professional coaching training course, which I’ve brought back to the tech teams, particularly when the issues encountered are: a bottleneck caused by one person in a process; a lack of dedicated time for a specialist to act as the team’s technical lead; or a loss of accountability amongst some team members.
Active listening: I’ve picked this up from my recent reading, and it’s quite incredible how much it helps to build on what’s been said. It involves listening not to respond, but to understand. You’ve got two hours ^^. Joking aside: it completely changes the power dynamics that can arise in certain workshops or meetings and, when combined with other tools, helps to smooth the flow of discussion, align expectations or identify the real levers for change or root causes.
14. Another topic you'd like to highlight?
This is a question that I think many of us have been asking ourselves over the last few months. In an effort to provide meaningful opportunities for sharing and discussion, conferences, meet-ups, cross-company initiatives, blogs, podcasts and live streams proliferated for a while, but we are now seeing a sharp decline: less financial support, fewer participants, and less time and budget allocated to enable speakers to prepare, deliver their talks and network…
I’ve been asking people around me to try to understand: I’m falling into the ‘survivor bias’. Everyone is convinced that these opportunities are worth preserving, so we keep giving more and more of our time and energy to keep our events afloat.
I hope this will continue because there are still many of us who see the value in it. I’m simply trying to understand how we can adapt our approach to remain relevant and continue to meet people’s needs.
15. Final word?
I think this sums up, to some extent, the message I’ve been trying to get across so far: the power of sharing and working together in what we achieve is the key to our progress.

Bonus questions
Your best anecdote from your work:
It’s about failure, legitimacy and learning.
When I was very young, I took the plunge and embarked on a new professional adventure: a new environment, a new technical context, new roles. Even back then, there was very little onboarding: I had to figure things out for myself. I got straight down to work, opened a project, read the code and got to grips with the basic concepts. So I started writing bits of code to test things out and take my exploration to the next level.
Except—do you remember the days when we managed just about everything as developers? We’d build, optimise and administer our databases; we’d design, create mock-ups, develop, test, deploy to production and provide support… And we’d do all this across every environment, from development right through to production…
So I broke an entire database schema… in production! On my second day…
I had two choices: run away or fix it. A quick splash of cold water on my face and off I went, trying to rebuild everything with my own two hands.
I’ve never learnt how an entire programme works so quickly ^^ and I quickly admitted my mistake to ensure the database kept running smoothly.
And you know what? I managed it!
The moral of the story? You always come out on top with a good dose of courage, a bit of water and well-documented code!
Your favourite book:
“The Pillars of the Earth” by Ken Follett
Extremely well-researched, it’s a historical novel that highlights Gothic architecture from the 1100s.
The underlying message that I generally like in my reading is this: together, we can overcome adversity!
I re-read it from time to time, and I bought the original English version whilst visiting… Mont Saint-Michel!
Your favourite video game:
If I can go a bit retro: Tetris.
It was the first video game I ever played – quite late in the day, actually: I was 12. And as it’s the only one where I can still beat my partner, I think it’s perfectly at home here.
Otherwise, at the moment (I’m a bit over 12 now), it’s without a doubt Factory Town (the second version has been released: I don’t dare look, for fear of opening a space-time rift). I love how it reflects the process optimisation aspect that I see in my job. In fact, I gave a talk on it and have already used it to present the concepts of Work in Progress and VSM!

Apollo 13 in the French version: I was 13 years old, I wanted to become an astronaut, and I discovered that ingenuity combined with engineering could work miracles to bring men doomed in space back to Earth.
The documentary ‘13 Factors That Saved Apollo 13’ is quite incredible to watch for that very reason, and spoiler alert: well, well… could the power of the collective be the key? ;-)
Your favourite tech book:
The one that both drew me in the most and, at the same time, taught me to take a step back is The Phoenix Project by Gene Kim, Kevin Behr and George Spafford: it’s an easy read (like a novel) and it’s crazy how much you recognise yourself in the situations.
